The most common cause of Hypothyroidism, or Underactive Thyroid, is an autoimmune disease called autoimmune thyroiditis. As you will probably be aware, the immune system makes antibodies to attack any viruses, germs or other bacteria that attack the body. An autoimmune disease will result in the immune system generating antibodies that will attack certain tissues within your own body.

With autoimmune thyroiditis, your immune system generates antibodies that attack your own thyroid gland, which in turn affects the function of the gland. Subsequently the thyroid gland is unable to make enough thyroxine and hypothyroidism gradually develops. Whilst the exact reason for this occurance is not understood, it is believed that something triggers the immune system to make these antibodies.

Autoimmune Thyroiditis is more common in people who have:

- A family history of hypothyroidism (as a result of autoimmune thyroiditis)

- Downs Syndrome. 1 in 3 people with Downs Syndrome will develop hypothyroidism before the age of 25. Unfortunately the symptoms of Hypothyroidism are not so apparent in people with Downs Syndrome, and for this reason a Dr may recommend an annual blood test to check for hypothyroidism.

- An enlarged thyroid gland (diffuse goitre)

- A history of Graves disease, or thyroiditis following childbirth

- Turners Syndrome. An annual blood test to check for hypothyroidism is normally advised for people suffering with this condition.

- A family history of other autoimmune conditions such as vitiligo, type 1 diabetes or coeliac disease (amongst others)

People with autoimmune thyroiditis may also develop a an enlarged/swollen gland (goitre). Autoimmune thyroiditis with a goitre is called Hashimoto’s Disease.

It is also likely that with a diagnoses of Hypothyroidism, you will find it difficult to lose any excess weight. As the thyroid controls yoru metabolism, you may find that even though you eat less than before, you gradually put on weight, and find it increasingly difficult to lose it. Especially if you suffer with some of the other symptoms such as muscle ache and fatigue.

Help is at hand, however, and there are natural diets out there that can help support your thyroid, and help you combat some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

What are the symptoms of an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism?

Before exploring the symptoms, its best to know what exactly we are dealing with here. An underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, means a reduced level of thyroid hormone “thyroxine”.

Thyroxine is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland, which is found in your neck. This hormone is carried around your body in the bloodstream and helps the body maintain its functions (the metabolism) working at the correct speed. A number of tissues and cells found in the body require thyroxine in order to work correctly.

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, means that the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroxine. This will cause many of the bodys functions to slow down. In contrast, an overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, will cause many of the bodys functions to speed up.

The symptoms of an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism include:

  • Weight Gain
  • Tiredness
  • Aches
  • Constipation
  • Feeling Cold
  • Dry Skin
  • Lifeless Hair
  • Fluid Retention
  • Mental Slowing
  • Depression

Some of the less common symptoms include:

  • Irregular or Heavy Periods
  • Hoarse Voice
  • Infertility
  • Loss of Sex Drive
  • Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (Pains & Numbness in hands)
  • Memory Loss & Confusion (in the elderly)

All these symptoms can be caused by other medical conditions, and diagnosis is not always obvious. Symptoms usually develop slowly, and gradually deteriorate over time, as the level of thyroxine reduces in the body.
